The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) is Arizona’s Earth science agency. We are responsible for mapping, evaluating, and informing the public regarding Arizona’s geologic setting. In order to meet this charge, we employ an interdisciplinary team of educated professionals that includes geologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, petroleum geologists, natural hazard specialists, GIS specialists, web developers, and science outreach and administrative personnel.

Technology Transfer Specialist

Description: The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS, www.azgs.az.gov) is seeking an individual with training and expertise in a wide breadth of areas to help lead a national effort communicating the technologies involved in the distribution of data services on the internet. The AZGS is the lead agency in building a national geoscience information system to allow discovery, evaluation, and access to data hosted by the USGS and state geological surveys (US Geoscience Information Network, http://usgin.org, http://lab.usgin.org ). This network is being adopted by a growing number of data providers including the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS), which is focused on delivering Earth science information for geothermal energy exploration and development (http://stategeothermaldata.org). Data from a wide variety of sources will be integrated in the system using community xml schema and vocabularies for data interchange, and distributed using existing software systems as open-source web services. All 50 states are represented in these projects, along with 15 federal agencies, industry consortia, and leading technology companies. AZGS is working closely with similar projects worldwide.

Duties: We are seeking candidates with the ability to document and present complex scientific and technical information to a wide variety of people, from data providers to application users. The Technology Transfer Specialist will work closely with IT and geoscience teams with varying levels of experience at state geological survey agencies as well as other industry, aca-demic, and government partners around the US. Work will include preparation of user guides, training manuals, online tutorials, videos, and installation guides, as well as organization and hosting of web conferences and short courses, design and hosting of exhibits at technical and professional meetings, formal and informal presentations to users, developers and policy-making groups, and preparation of promotional materials. Innovative use of social media and other online or technology-based communication is desired.

Requirements: Knowledge of and skill with compiling, writing, and editing technical publications and presentations. Ability to report on, and translate complex technical specification documents. Skill in explaining complex software operation and data manipulation to non-expert users. Understanding of basic IT concepts. Experience with software systems utilizing OGC or ISO standards is a plus. Successful candidates will have formal training in one or more areas such as but not necessarily limited to English, writing, communications, computer science, physical sciences, or closely related fields.
