Geosciences & Geospatial Client Applications Developer

**THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED. THE FIRST REVIEW OF RESUMES WILL BEGIN IMMEDIATELY. ANY ADDITIONAL RESUMES WILL BE REVIEWED AS NEEDED.**

Description: The Arizona Geological Survey is seeking individuals with a strong interest in geoinformatics to assist with the de-velopment, implementation and deployment of client applications for interoperable geoscience and geospatial data services on the Web. The AZGS is working on a geoscience information system to allow discovery, evaluation, and access to data hosted by the USGS and state geological surveys. This effort will provide a major data component in the National Geothermal Data System, which aims to make geothermal energy exploration and development easier by making data more accessible. The AZGS effort is focused on the implementation of Open Geospatial Consortium web services (WMS, WFS, CSW, etc.), and other service protocols as necessary in order to bring data online. To the maximum extent possible, we prefer building on existing software systems, such as ESRI Geoportal Server, GeoServer, Drupal, Django, Open Layers, Flex, and ArcGIS. Data from a wide variety of sources will be integrated in the system using community-built xml schema and vocabularies.

Duties: Work will include the creation of software applications for network users to locate and utilize data published via service interfaces with standardized, interoperable content. This will involve designing and implementing interfaces and functionality for workflows involving catalog search for data services, connection to services, browsing and acquisition of data, and simple analytical processes. Client applications will be stand-alone web apps, as well as plug-ins and extensions for GIS and analytical software like ArcGIS or Excel. The developer will work closely with geologists and IT teams at state geological surveys across the US.

The project is funded by NSF and US Dept. of Energy.  Partners include Microsoft Research, U.S. Geological Survey, and Energistics. We are also collaborating with data networks covering groundwater, environment, oceans, atmosphere and space sciences, and global geologic maps. Learn more at http://usgin.org, http://lab.usgin.org, www.stategeothermaldata.org.

Requirements: We are seeking an individual with some geoscience background as well as experience and/or interest in web services, xml, data integration, and user interface design. All candidates should exhibit a working knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, C#, Java), a basic knowledge of xml syntax and schema, and a basic understanding of geologic concepts. The ideal candidate has a working knowledge of OGC service protocols, a basic understanding of HTTP protocols, resource- and service-oriented architecture, and the ability to communicate with geoscience users to identify re-quirements and obtain feedback on usability. We do not expect candidates to have all of these qualifications, but a successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in, and the capacity to learn about all facets of the system's architecture.
