AZGS state map program 2010

AZGS geologists are gearing up for another State Map field season. This year the focus is on southwestern Arizona near Yuma (three 7.5’ quadrangles), north-central Yavapai county north of Prescott (two 7.5’ quadrangles), and east of Tucson along the Pima-Cochise County line (one 7.5’ quadrangle).  See below for the titles of the six quadrangles scheduled for 2010.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently announced that AZGS will be awarded $191,957 – about 75% of the requested amount -- for the 2010 State Map 2010 cycle.  Nationwide State map awards are running about 70% requested value.

The State Map program is the state component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program.  Funding in equal proportions is provided by the individual state survey and the U.S. Geological Survey.  AZGS has engaged in State Map activities since the 1990’s. Jon Spencer, AZGS Senior Geologist, directs the our State Map involvement.
